UK’s ‘greenest’ sports centre plan approved

£53m University of Portsmouth facility – with solar panels, a grass roof and bee box – aiming for BREEAM Outstanding status

Planning permission has been granted for what will become one of the “greenest” sports centres in the UK – a university facility, featuring solar panels, a grass roof and a home for bees.

Portsmouth City Council approved the £53m University of Portsmouth facility, which is being designed for students, staff and community use.

Designed by British architecture studio FaulknerBrowns, the building is on course to achieve BREEAM Outstanding accreditation, setting “new standards for sustainability” and making it “one of the greenest sports facilities in the UK”.

Improvements around the facility include new pedestrian routes, an urban orchard, and an number of trees planted.

Fiona Bell, estates and campus services director of the university, said the institution’s aspiration was to have a facility that boasted the “highest sustainability standards”.

Facilities include an eight-court sports hall, an eight-lane 25 metre swimming pool, a fitness suite, multipurpose studios, squash courts, a climbing wall and a ski simulator.
