Leeds Rhinos secure green energy partnership

Planet-U signs three-year sponsorship deal with Super League club to provide electricity and gas for Headingley

Headingley, the home stadium of English rugby league club Leeds Rhinos, has become the latest sports venue to turn to renewable energy.

As part of a new three-year sponsorship deal with the Super League team, Leeds-based green energy supplier Planet-U will become the sole supplier of gas and electricity at the stadium.

The stadium, which adjoins with Headingley Cricket Ground, is currently being redeveloped to improve both the rugby and cricket facilities, the latter ahead of the 2019 Cricket World Cup in which it will be one of the hosts.

Planet-U also supplies energy to Wembley Stadium and Yorkshire Building Society, and belongs to parent company Planet Holdings, which was founded by entrepreneur Grant Nicholson.

Nicholson said the company was continuing to invest in its energy market team to bring “100% renewable energy” to its growing base of clients.

Headingley will be the latest UK sports venue to go 100% renewable energy. Arsenal Football Club’s partnership with green energy company Octopus has transformed its Emirates Stadium, while Lord’s Cricket Ground became the first British cricket venue to go 100% renewable in 2017.
