World Sailing’s proposed sustainability strategy backed by Council

Council unanimously approves Sustainability Agenda 2030 following extensive consultation period

A sustainability strategy being developed by World Sailing will be published by the end of this week after the governing body’s Council unanimously supported the document.

After the Sustainability Agenda 2030 strategy was initially proposed at World Sailing’s 2017 Annual Conference last November, stakeholders were given the opportunity to provide feedback.

Around 305 people from 75 nations contributed over that period of consultation, helping the body’s Sustainability Commission refine targets.

Dan Reading, World Sailing’s sustainability programme manager, provided the Council with an update of the consultation during the organisation’s 2018 mid-year meeting this week, after which the Council – headed up by president Kim Andersen – gave the work the green light.

Earlier this month, Reading told delegates at the Sustainable Innovation in Sport conference that Sustainability Agenda 2030 was developed using the same frameworks as the International Olympic Committee’s sustainability strategy and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
